DDL Hearing. Made in Italy

Caputi (Historical Trademarks): “Good nature of the measure, but changes are needed to ensure protection and development of Historical Trademarks”

Rome, November 2, 2023

“The DDL Made in Italy is the first real organic intervention regarding the protection of the “Italy brand” in the world: it links all the assets on which Italy’s productive heritage is based and recognizes the strategic role of Historical Trademarks.”

Commented Massimo Caputi, President ofAssociation of Italian Historical Trademarks, speaking at a hearing at the House of Representatives Committee on Production Activities, as part of the examination of the DDL Made in Italy.

However, some changes are necessary: we need to improve the Enterprise Safeguard Fund, allowing access to Historical Trademarks companies for expansion and development as well, and ensure free revaluation of Historical Trademarks so as to incentivize companies to increase the asset value of their know-how by enhancing their intangible assets and strengthening themselves with a view to maintaining production activities and human capital in the country. It is also necessary to review the tax credit for investment in advertising and digitization of historical business archives to make them extraordinary reservoirs for heritage enhancement. These Historical Trademarks must be preserved from discrediting and imitation phenomena that damage the true Italian Trademark, also in light of the numerous acquisitions in recent years of Trademarks of excellence by large foreign groups.”

The introduction of strengthening measures for the Historical Trademarks sector is linked to the centrality of the industry: to date, there are about 440 companies and more than 600 Historical Trademarks registered in the Uibm-Mimit Registry, with a turnover of more than 40 billion euros and about 65 thousand employees. Next event set for April 15, the day of the National Day of Made in Italy: an opportunity for outreach that aims to increase awareness among the population of the contribution of Historical Trademarks to the economic, civil and democratic history of the country.
