Historical Trademarks of Made in Italy: Spinosi

The February column in We the Italians magazine takes us to the Marche region, to Campofilone, in the heart of an area that has made egg pasta an identity symbol, to tell the story of Pastificio Spinosi, since 2022 on the Special Register of Historical Trademarks of National Interest. A story that has its roots in 1933 and that, for almost a century, has been exporting Marche’s know-how to the world.

It all began with Nello Spinosi who, on his business trips to Rome, would bring as gifts Maccheroncini di Campofilone prepared in the family. There was no industrial equipment: only skilled hands and a deep knowledge of the art of homemade pasta. In 1960 he opened the first artisanal workshop in Campofilone and the first package intended for sale was born. Thus began the commercialization of a product until then limited to home consumption.

Since 1933, the Spinosi family has been preserving and renewing tradition, keeping intact the distinctive traits that make the product unique: bronze die, selected ingredients, fresh eggs broken strictly by hand and slow 24-hour drying. A process that allows the pasta to better retain the sauces and preserve its organoleptic characteristics.

The secret of Maccheroncini di Campofilone lies in their apparent simplicity. Extremely thin, they cook in just one minute, absorb sauce up to almost three times their weight, and do not shake. Processing is still done by hand: the eggs are broken by hand, the maccheroncini laid on the back of a blade and then arranged on a sheet of white paper that becomes their traditional packaging. In 2013, under the presidency of Vincenzo Spinosi of the Campofilone pasta makers’ association, European I.G.P. recognition arrived, protecting the indissoluble link with the territory.

Starting in the 1970s, the company developed its own retail network with outlets equipped with a laboratory, controlling the entire supply chain from production to marketing. In the 2000s a new format, Spinosini, dedicated to sons Marco and Riccardo, was born and soon became an internationally known brand. Spinosini were even served to Pope John Paul II during a visit to Loreto and, before 2000, the maccheroncini al nero di seppia even arrived on board the Concorde.

The path of growth is studded with prestigious awards: in 2010, in Cannes, Spinosi receives the “Five Stars Diamonds Awards” from the American Academy of Hospitality and Sciences. In 2015 she was chosen as the Testimonial of Marche in the World at Expo 2015 Milan, an experience replicated at Expo 2020 Dubai and more recently at Expo 2025 Osaka, within the exhibition “Ars: tradition and innovation” in the Italian Pavilion. A path that testifies to the ability to combine culture, craftsmanship and technological innovation, in the sign of harmony between tradition and future.

Today the company exports to the United States, Asia-particularly China and Hong Kong-and several European countries. A generational transition also began in 2004: Marco Spinosi joined the company and currently holds the position of director, joined by his brother Riccardo in the corporate structure.

2019 sees the birth of ZERO+, the first egg pasta with red lentil flour: an organic and functional line high in protein and fiber, gluten-free, designed for athletes and those who pay attention to metabolic well-being. Developed in collaboration with Professor Fabrizio Angelini, endocrinologist and president of SINSEB, ZERO+ combines nutritional innovation and respect for the production traditions that have always distinguished the pasta factory.

From the domestic kitchens of the Marche region to the most prestigious international tables, Spinosi’s story is that of a company that has been able to transform an ancient knowledge into a global brand, without ever losing its connection to its territory.

A Historical Trademarks that continues to tell, through each strand of pasta, the authentic identity of Made in Italy.
