Historical Trademarks: Stanguellini

This month’s feature tells the story of Stanguellini, one of the iconic brands of Italy’s Motor Valley and Modena’s oldest automobile manufacturer. A family history spanning over a century, born of a passion for mechanics and nurtured through research, innovation, and racing successes that have helped make Italian automotive excellence famous around the world.

The origins of the Stanguellini family date back to 1879, when Celso Stanguellini founded a workshop in Modena to produce orchestral timpani, developing an innovative, patented mechanical tuning system. In 1900, his son Francesco transformed the family business into one of the city’s first automobile workshops: music gave way to engines, but the pursuit of precision and technical perfection remained unchanged.

Francesco Stanguellini was one of the pioneers of motorsports in Modena: in the early 20th century, he competed in races with motorized tricycles and Ceirano and Scat cars, and also became Modena’s first Fiat dealer. His passion helped foster a true automotive culture in the city, which led to the founding of the fledgling Scuderia Stanguellini in 1925.

After Francesco’s untimely death in 1932, his son Vittorio Stanguellini, just 22 years old, took up the torch and transformed the family workshop into a hub of innovation destined to leave its mark on the history of motorsports. In the 1930s and 1940s, the first Stanguellini Team was formed, and the Modena-based brand became synonymous with competitiveness, ingenuity, and design expertise.
