Manifatture Sigaro Toscano joins the Association of Italian Historical Trademarks
Enrolled in the Register of Historical Trademarks of National Interest on September 6, 2024, a recognition obtained thanks to its most iconic product, Antico TOSCANO®, Manifatture Sigaro Toscano represents one of the most authentic expressions of Italy’s manufacturing tradition, guardian of an excellence that spans more than two centuries of history.
The birth of the TOSCANO® cigar dates back to August 1815, at the Manifattura Tabacchi in Florence, when a fortuitous event marked the beginning of a legend. A batch of Kentucky tobacco, left to dry in the sun, was hit by a violent summer storm. Now considered unusable for traditional processing, that tobacco was destined for the production of cheap cigars. The result was surprising: the fermentation triggered by the water gave the product a new, intense and unmistakable taste.
Success was immediate and, as early as 1818, regular production of TOSCANO® cigars began, destined to become a symbol deeply rooted in Italian culture. During the nineteenth century, the cigar was also intertwined with the events of the Risorgimento, becoming an emblem of national identity and independence.
After decades of experimentation, the cultivation of Kentucky tobacco was also started in Italy, consolidating an entirely national production chain. In 1927, the TOSCANO® brand was officially born, destined to become synonymous with quality and tradition.
A new phase opened in the early 2000s: between 2004 and 2006, with the privatization process of the industry, Manifatture Sigaro Toscano was born, bringing the historical brand back under Italian control. Since then, the company has embarked on a path of growth and enhancement of its heritage, expanding its international presence.
Among the most significant milestones were the acquisition in 2008 of the Pedroni brand and, in 2015, of Avanti Cigar & Co in the United States, a reality founded by Italian emigrants who had been able to reproduce overseas a TOSCANO®-inspired cigar. Transactions that have strengthened the company’s global projection, keeping tradition and manufacturing excellence at the center.
In 2018, TOSCANO® cigars celebrated 200 years since they were first marketed, confirming their leadership in Italy and increasing international appreciation as a symbol of the Italian lifestyle.
Entry in the Historical Trademarks Register now represents a significant recognition for Manifatture Sigaro Toscano, enhancing its role in protecting and promoting the national industrial heritage.
By joining the Association of Italian Historical Trademarks, Manifatture Sigaro Toscano contributes to strengthening the system of expertise and industrial tradition represented by historical trademarks, authentic witnesses of the country’s manufacturing excellence.
