Protection of Made in Italy: PGI for artisan and industrial products from Dec. 1
A historic turning point for the protection of Made in Italy: artisanal and industrial products will also be able to benefit from the protection of Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs), until now reserved only for agricultural and food products. The news comes thanks to the adoption of the new Regulation (EU) 2023/2411, which will come into force on December 1, 2025.
This extension of PGIs represents a strategic opportunity to enhance production skills linked to territories, support quality craftsmanship and strengthen local industrial identity, central elements of Italy’s cultural and economic heritage. Protection may be sought for products that are distinguished by quality, reputation or characteristics traceable to geographical origin, such as Murano glass or the Maniago knife.
The Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy will be the authority responsible for administering the new framework, with a recognition and registration system similar to that already in use for agri-food production.
A reform that also opens up new scenarios for the Historical Trademarks, which will be able to better protect their productions of excellence, in Italy and abroad.
