2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

What concrete initiatives have you already launched or are you planning to address the major ongoing transformations, including the green and ecological transition, digital transformation and sustainability?

“Since 2020, Maddalena SpA has pursued a voluntary sustainability journey that is now fully integrated into the company’s strategy. Its ecological transition focuses on improving energy efficiency at its production facility, using renewable energy, reducing emissions and conducting product life cycle assessments, which will soon receive EPD International certification. Digital transformation is an integral part of the same business model: Maddalena develops smart meters and connected solutions that turn measurement into a tool for using water more consciously and efficiently, while reducing waste. These initiatives are complemented by certified management systems, a strong focus on people and the supply chain, and voluntary ESG reporting through the Sustainability Report, which enables the company to measure its results and progress towards its objectives.”

INNOVATION

What recent product or process innovation, or innovative communication project, would you like to highlight in terms of the market advantages it has generated?

“A significant example is the ElecTo platform, developed through investments in R&D and the strengthening of in-house expertise in electronics. Building on the know-how gained in water metering and remote reading, which Maddalena introduced as early as the late 1990s, the company developed a digital platform that can be applied to different metering technologies. This has enabled Maddalena to rapidly expand its range of native smart meters, simplifying their development and evolution. Wireless communication and interoperability with third-party systems also make ElecTo solutions flexible and well suited to modern water networks, strengthening the company’s competitiveness both in the divisional market and in the utilities sector.”

NEW SKILLS

Based on your experience, what advice would you give to SMEs with a Historic Trademark seeking to bring new skills into their company and integrate them effectively with the family’s younger generations?

“History and new skills should not be seen as alternatives, but as complementary elements. In a family business, generational continuity preserves identity, values, market knowledge and a long-term vision, while opening up to external professionals, including international talent, brings new skills, experience and perspectives that are essential for navigating constantly evolving markets and technologies.

Equally important is investing in the people already within the company through continuous training and upskilling. Maddalena SpA’s experience demonstrates that a Historic Trademark remains competitive when it succeeds in preserving its roots without being afraid to evolve, creating an ongoing dialogue between experience and innovation.”
