Mustad Joins the Association of Italian Historical Trademarks

Listed in the Register of Historical Trademarks of National Interest on February 15, 2021, under the Panelvit® trademark, Mustad is one of the most significant historic companies in the Italian manufacturing industry, with over a century of experience in the production of high-performance fasteners.

The company’s history began in 1912, when the Mustad family acquired a factory in Pinerolo, in the province of Turin, to produce horseshoes using a hot-forging process. This marked the founding of “O. Mustad & Figlio,” launching an industrial journey that would eventually lead the company to become one of Europe’s leading manufacturers in the sector.

Since the 1920s, Mustad has demonstrated a strong commitment to innovation. In 1924, the manufacturing process evolved from forging to cold forging, while in 1928, the production of nails was supplemented by a line of wood screws. The company’s growth led to the acquisition of a second plant in Balangero, also in the province of Turin, in 1933.

During World War II, the Balangero plant was completely destroyed by a fire, but by 1947 the company had already rebuilt it, demonstrating great resilience and continuity in production.

In the postwar period, Mustad continued its path of technological development: in 1952, the first self-tapping screws for metal materials were introduced, and in 1967, the first furnace for carburizing heat treatment—essential for the new generations of technical screws—began operation. In the 1970s, production evolved further thanks to the introduction of rolling machines—innovative equipment that enabled more precise and high-performance machining and facilitated the development of the first specialty screws for the industrial sector.

The 1980s marked a significant period of industrial growth and expansion of the product line, with the introduction of increasingly advanced fastening solutions for the woodworking and industrial sectors. In 1990, the Lubex® lubrication treatment was developed—an innovation that reduces friction and improves screwdriving performance.

In the years that followed, the company further consolidated its position by obtaining major quality and industry certifications, including ISO 9000, ISO/TS 16949 for the automotive sector, and CE markings for structural screws. Since 2000, every screw produced has been marked with the company logo, guaranteeing the product’s quality and origin.

Today, Mustad is a 100% Made in Italy company with two production facilities in Balangero and Pinerolo, specializing in the production of millions of screws every day for both large industrial customers and qualified distributors in Italy and Europe. The company continues to invest in research, technological innovation, sustainability, and customer service, developing specific solutions for different materials and industrial applications.

The recognition of the Panelvit® brand as a “Historical Trademark” in 2021 attests to the value of an industrial tradition built on quality, innovation, and continuous production.
